Mr Smith qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital in London with a first class degree in Neurosciences and honours in Surgery.
After six months of Neurosurgery he began his ophthalmic training. His registrar training was based at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England. During his first year at Moorfields Eye Hospital (1999) he worked in the refractive surgery department and began performing photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) under the supervision of Mr Julian Stevens, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. As a registrar he was trained in glaucoma, cataract, vitreo-retinal, corneo-refractive and oculoplastic surgery. In 2003 he carried out a fellowship in Cataract and Corneo refractive surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
In 2004 he was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with sub-speciality interests in glaucoma, cataract and corneo-refractive surgery at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, England. He is an Honorary consultant in the refractive surgery department at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
He has numerous research papers published in medical literature and has presented his research at scientific conferences in the UK, Europe and USA.
Mr Smith has full registration with the General Medical Council and the specialist register as an Ophthalmologist. He is currently a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the British Society of Refractive Surgeons, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmologists.
Jennifer graduated in 1999 as a Dispensing Optician, then from Anglia Polytechnic University with First Class Honours in Optometry in 2003. She completed her pre-registration year at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and has continued to work to the level of Consultant Optometrist in the Hospital Eye Service ever since.
Jen has a specialist interest in medical contact lenses and has presented extensively in papers, posters, lectures and wet labs on scleral and other complex contact lenses and their applications for visual and therapeutic rehabilitation in ocular disease at national and international congresses.
Jen is the Registered Manager of Matrix Eye Clinic and is responsible for ensuring that the clinic complies with all legal and regulatory requirements set out by the CQC and relevant professional bodies. In addition, Jen leads the Matrix Academy through which the clinic drives clinical research to improve treatment options and outcomes for patients as well as providing educational tools for other healthcare professionals.
Dr Toms joined the Matrix Eye Clinic team in 2024 as a GMC registered Ophthalmologist with a special interest in nutritional ophthalmology.
Dr Toms has a strong background in functional and nutritional medicine and focusses on the relationship between the ocular surface and gut microbiomes to balance blood sugars and reduce inflammation in order to optimise ocular function.
At Matrix Eye Clinic, Dr Toms can consult on a wide range of eye conditions including ocular rosacea, dry eye disease, glaucoma, and ocular discomfort.
Over the last 35 years, Richard has run B2B medical devices operations from South Africa, to Italy and the UK, partnered and ran a Vision Express opticians store and built a global distributor network for the TearLab Corporation.
Richard & Guy have worked together on various projects throughout their careers. In 2017, Richard was undertaking some ophthalmic clinical research about Dry Eyes with Guy. Guy mentioned that there was no institution in the Greater Swindon area outside of a hospital that was specifically built for eye care, which gave the pair the idea for Matrix Eye Clinic.
Richard has led the charge in securing and renovating premises for Matrix Eye Clinic, helped build the client base, and procured the technology and machinery needed to run testing and diagnosis for patients through his extensive network in the ophthalmology field.
Cara has 12 years of experience in theatre nursing with a specialty in ophthalmics, among other indications.
In addition to working as a theatre scrub nurse, Cara is responsible for the everyday running of our theatre operations and cataract patients. Cara is the go-to for your entire patient journey, from measuring biometry and running diagnostics, to booking surgery, ordering the lenses, assisting Mr Smith in theatre, and liaising with patients post-op to answer any questions or queries.
Barbara has over 29 years of experience in ophthalmic nursing.
Barbara works alongside the theatre team to provide exceptional care for our cataract patients. She will be there throughout the day of your surgery, preparing you for your operation, monitoring your condition and providing any information, care or biscuits that may be needed both pre- and post-operation.
Alison runs our reception and offices. Her responsibilities include (but are not limited to!): booking patient appointments, managing the phoneline, recording and entering patients’ clinical information into our system, and preparing all written documentation as dictated by Mr Smith and distributing them to opticians, GPs and consultants. Alison also oversees the daily running of the clinic, invoicing, ordering lenses and equipment for theatre, and management/filing of patient information.
Sally has over 25 years’ experience as an ophthalmic theatre nurse.
Sally is a crucial member of the theatre team and will be there throughout your cataract surgery, assisting Mr Smith during your operation. She will bring you back to the lounge for recovery after your surgery.
